Glide into 2018 with this masterful “space opera,” a gift made with love and intention by the beautiful soul that is Kiernan Laveaux. I feel like this mix and its story (see below) truly embodies everything that I want Neptunian Influence to be and I couldn’t be more ecstatic to share it with you to carry into the new year.

Kiernan Laveaux is 1/3 of the team behind In Training, Cleveland’s queer electronic music night, and while she has only been DJing since 2015, her DJ sets and depth of musical knowledge make it clear why she has already made a name for herself. It comes as no surprise that Objekt named her as one of the 11 brilliant DJs he found out about in 2017. You can catch her in Detroit twice this week: TONIGHT at Marble Bar and Friday at Takoi. Other upcoming gigs include Chicago on January 5, Berlin on January 12, and then back in Cleveland for In Training with Octo Octa on January 20. I’ve been lucky enough to see her play out once now and it’s something special! As Laveaux’s bio states, “she exists only to channel warmth and love to her friends and other transgender dancers through her DJ sets.”

Very happy to be contributing this entry to the Neptunian Influence series curated by Whipnotiq, after having met and bonded with her over our shared love of electro sound in Chicago in October 2017, and dancing in the sun during the electro brunch she curated over Detroit weekend 2017. Endless inspiration for this mix stemming from extended moments of light and darkness in my life surrounding the solar eclipse of August 2017 to the end of October 2017, the performances from Kiddo, Antiphase, and 214 at the October 2017 Planet Chicago party, the unconditional love and warmth gifted to me by Sassmouth throughout my journey in the world of music, the energies transmuted by a convergence of people who exist outside the realms of cisgender heterosexual manhood attempting to convey the gift of aural storytelling to themselves and others, expanding pathways, megabus rides, trans-neptunian objects, and water. I applied all of this to the tale of a group of intergalactic trans mermaids located in the water of the rings of Saturn who exist in tranquility until their lives are compromised by physical and metaphysical invaders that they are forced into battle against. They are banished from their home in the process into the realms of the universe that lie beyond Neptune and the Kuiper Belt, and must chart a journey home, eventually making the long return to their waters of love and freedom within Saturn’s hold. I encourage you to imprint yourself upon this concept while listening to this mix. The influence of Neptune is felt in the dictation of the water that comprises 73% of the human brain and heart, which holds the ability to influence many of our physical and metaphysical actions. Do not be alarmed by the strength of ever changing tides, as the waves inside of you will always sway in beautiful and enchanting rhythm. Effort Won’t Betray You ❤
